I found this new ad by Dove very interesting. There have been a lot of controversial things done by Dove and I think this may be another. Three years ago, the company put out a controversial video titled "Real Beauty". Many found the ad insulting rather than uplifting. In their new ad, they aim to fight beauty standards in India. They show a large group of women wearing different hairstyles, different clothing, and a variety of age groups. However, the ad does not feature a large variety of skin tones and body types. If they really wanted to raise women's' self esteem and change beauty ideals, they should actually feature women with different body types and darker skin tones.

Thanks for posting. I actually found the ad to have quite a variety of colors and shapes initially. I agree there could have been more extreme examples, but I think it may have been even more effective to be slightly more subtle then trying to be inclusive of every imaginable size.
Upon a second viewing, I think there was more light skinned then dark but a few "token" darker skinned woman, and it would have been nice to see a more balanced view. That being said, did it accurately portray India? Was this were this was shown exclusively? Because its also interesting to note their are many fairly Caucasian woman in the ad although in India that population is tiny (from my experience). Did they feel the need to include them because they are considered a norm of beauty? I feel like to be more accurate to the population there would have been more darker skinned beauties and less fair skinned.

I usually often like Dove's commercial and I liked their "real beauty" one too. But as you said it lacks variety of skin tones and body shapes, which I really think the should have incorporated more. If they'd done that they would definitely done a perfect ad! But I guess it's hard to incorporate all these things in one, I don't know. But I do really agree with you!
