An Instagram post that showed a preview of a YouTube video showed two males with blonde and brunette wigs on with the caption: “When you don’t know anything about the presidential election.” They were talking about the upcoming presidential elections, by speaking about Bernie Sanders and Jeb Bush. The first “girl” said in a high-pitched voice that she is going to vote for “Bernie Sandlers…Bernie Sandman” (obviously being uninformed about Bernie Sanders’ real name). The second “girl” said, “Jeb Bush said that if girls are on welfare, they should have a husband. I’m on welfare, where’s my husband? Where’s my husband?”

The preview showed the “girls” as uneducated and misinformed. The video in its entirety was even worse. It is very condescending towards women. The two “girls” are saying random comments about the election that makes them seem dumb. One of the comments was, “If Hilary Clinton wins, does that mean that girls get to vote?” This is a ridiculous comment to make and shows that those “girls” think that women cannot yet vote. Another comment that was made was, “If Hilary Clinton wins, does that mean she has a penis?” Not only is this comment an attack on the intelligence of women, it is an attack at any women who wants to run for president because it implies that the president should have a penis and be male.

This video was meant to be funny and entertaining. It was meant to show how some people are ignorant and uninformed about the upcoming presidential election. This video could have been a good video, but the fact that the two characters in the video are males dressed as females is sexist. If there were one male and one female in the video, it would not have been such an attack on the female intelligence. This would show that there are many people who are misinformed and not solely females.

I did not see this video before this but just reading your description I know exactly how it goes and what it looks like.
I have seen soo many memes, movies, shows and clips that portray women just like this.
This is so typical when guys don't really have anything funny or real to say, all they do is throw on a wig and talk in a high-pitched voice and thats that. Its an easy way for guys to hide their lack of talent, things to communicate and it just shows their sexism. This wouldn't work if it was opposite way around, two girls talking like guys. This is all because of patriarchy its always fun to see men that in our society are ranked highest to step down and dress up like girls.

Wow!!! I cannot believe that actually did happen! How could they say women get to vote once Hilary wins her election. They are so misinformed as you said. I still can't quite believe that I suspect if that was just an act they pulled off sarcastically. And the penis thing, I find that very sexist. It is like a person spitting on his/her own face! All those action while they put wigs on which make them real stupids. It's still a wonder they could actually say those misinformed or really stupid phrases.
What a shame!!

Videos like these gain a lot of views and popularity because the subject matter seems ridiculous. There are so many videos and skits people create to undermine and exploit unintelligence in various areas of the US and also among various groups of people (women, white "hill billy" Americans, minority groups), and it's really disturbing how hurtful and misleading they are. Often I believe the intention is to mock a stereotype , but when girls like the ones exploited in the video you mention actually say what they did and believe in what they said, it seems more like bullying the misinformed. Instead, these kinds of videos should be less mocking and be pushed towards encouraging better education ESPECIALLY when it comes to basic American politics and history. The troubling fact is that women are, in general, socially brought up to fit this stereotype of an uninformed trophy prize, and then these videos mock THEM instead of the system that causes it to begin with. Really sad. Thanks for sharing this story, it really resonated with me and I feel strongly about these kinds of videos.

I don't understand why the stereotypical uninformed voter is a female. There are plenty of men and women of different ethnicities, interests, and states that choose not to be part of the presidential election. You are right Cassandra, it is an attack on women and not only is it offensive, but it's a bit dated. You would think people would stop having the impression that women are stupid and incapable of making educated decisions. This is a view very common in history, but should not have an effect in society today.

The whole "attack on female intelligence" got real old real quick. It is so annoying to see videos like the one you mentioned and are supposed to be funny. Men think they can make a video trying to attack the intelligence of women and generalize us while they are being ignorant themselves. I think men try to discourage women voicing their opinions on politics by doing this and think they're going to succeed in doing so. But they wouldn't need to resort to mocking women in order to try and prove their point if they were more intelligent than women.
