Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year; I love all things spooky and scary. I love the movies, the decorations, of course the candy, and the costumes. However, the costumes for women, as I'm sure most of you know, have become somewhat offensive. In any given Halloween store, you will find a male section and a female section. In the male section, there will be cop, doctor, fireman, etc costumes. In the female section, there will only be sexy cop, sexy doctor, sexy firewoman, etc. These costume options illustrate the clear sexism and gender roes in our society. It is one thing for certain women to dress in scantily clad costumes if they choose; they are completely entitled to that decision. It is a completely different thing to categorize all women into wanting to dress sexy for Halloween, and only selling sexualized versions of costumes for women.

Hi Gianna, I did realize that when I went to the stores last week. I have one thing to say about it though. Store owners only bring products that they know will sell and their buyers want. Our society has come to the point where the women don't think their outfit looks amazing until it is showing sexual parts of their body. Women want the attention of men, and they know to get that, they need to dress a certain way (looking sexy). I'm happy you realized that, and I'm sure there are places that sell normal and cute costumes you can buy for women.

**Please note when I say women or men I DON'T mean all of them!!

I know said that you weren't referring to all women or men, but you seem to be making a pretty drastic generalization. You also mentioned that there would be costumes for women in certain stores that would be normal and "cute." These other women, like myself, who do not solely aim to attract attention from men and do not care if they look "cute", may not want a normal and cute costume. What if we want a scary costume? To have lots of blood and guts, looking like an absolute gory (not slutty or cute) mess. I am guessing you will say that they might buy a men's costume or make it themselves. The point is, we shouldn't have to. There should be many more costume options for women that aren't so hard to find or objectifying. True, society has come to over-sexualize women, especially in halloween costumes, but essentially, this shouldn't be. Making the assumption that most women " don't think their outfit looks amazing until it is showing sexual parts of their body. Women want the attention of men, and they know to get that, they need to dress a certain way (looking sexy)" is just not correct. This is a perfect example of the misogyny that this society has come to accept, and also, the stereotypes and stigma in sexism that affects all women.

I love Halloween too, but I can't go into Halloween stores without getting angry and/or depressed because of essentially everything you stated above. Over-sexualized female costumes, cultural appropriation, and generally tasteless costumes are only some of a multitude of problems.

While I don't agree that all women only want to attract the attention of a man and feel they need to dress sexy to do it, most women do. I think that is why the women's section in a Halloween store has more sexy costumes than tasteful ones. They will sell. Sex sells and unfortunately, I don’t see the times changing any time soon. Storeowners will not fill their stores with things they won’t make money on. Also, some women want to dress sexy for Halloween because it is the only time of year they are “allowed” to get away with it without being called out because the majority of girls are dressed similar. In my opinion, the best costumes are ones that you don’t buy in a Halloween store. Halloween is the best opportunity to get a little creative without having to subject yourself to all the “slutty” stereotypes.

Hey Gianna, I can understand the sexualization of women during one of my favorite holidays as well. But lets be honest, every single holiday(with a theme) can be sexualized in one way or another. Even for Christmas, one of the most formal holidays for all in America, can be sexualized as well. Just take a look at the Christmas dance scene from Mean girls, which shocked the whole audience but ended up loving it in the end.
The point of Halloween is to really dress the way you want to, however you want to for just a day. However, what I can understand is that women do like to feel sexy in the clothes they wear outside of holidays. Dress to Impress. Nowadays, halloween has the huge notion that women can now dress in skin tight, small articles of clothing without a care in the world and be able to show that on social media with now harm involved. People will care less on this day of how somebody is dressed because that is what Halloween is mainly about, dressing however you want to. But how different would reactions be if a person dressed like they did on halloween on a regular day? Exactly. It would be mad weird, lets be honest. But many of the companies that sell the costumes understand that notion. That is why they continue to sell these types of the costumes for customers, knowing that they WILL be bought at a very unreasonable price.
