I am one of those people that cannot focus with music on. If I have music on it is distracting me and it is the only thing I can focus on. In fact I listen to it at the gym so that I can forget what I am doing and only focus on the music that I am playing. My sister can work on homework with music on and so much more. But, I just cannot. Does it mean something when you can focus with music, or is it much simpler than that?

I am exactly like you! I have really thought about this, as most of my friends listen to some kind of music while doing things that require mental focus ie studying. For me it is an absolute distracting, even playing at the lowest volume possible as it is something that absorbs all my attention. Music is otherwise a very big part of my life, and I've found that a probable reason that I can't have it on while studying, is that it arouses an interest in me, catching my attention. Maybe you're into music more than your sister?

I love music, but I can't really focus or work on homework while music is playing unless it's on a really low volume and is something similar to ambient or atmospheric music. Lyrics and structured rhythms really distract me, which is unfortunate and frustrating because I really love music and I wish I could listen to it while I studied. Instead, I've found that I study best with white noise in the background, which explains why I can only handle unobtrusive tones and melodies. I'm not sure if being able to study while listening to music means anything, but perhaps you and I are just more prone to being distracted?
