Unfortunately there was three bombings/bombing attempts in New York and New Jersey Saturday the 17th committed by Ahmad Khan Rahami. A total of 31 people were injured and taken to the hospital. This led to a manhunt for him nationwide, which ended in police shooting and capturing him.

An attempt at his pursuit was a WANTED alert that was sent to many people’s cell phones. The alert specifically stated “WANTED: Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28-year-old male. See media for pic. Call 9-1-1 if seen.” This was irresponsible to send out a mass warning for a person with a Muslim name that had no image; particularly, because of the extreme rise in islamophobia/xenophobia in society. This can give opportunity for any citizen to target a person they believe fits this description.

I believe it was extremely harmful for Apple (or whatever authority) to give permission for this to be released. I also think this WANTED alert could have very easily had an image of the suspect attached. To leave such critical information out of such a shocking alert is very dangerous. This made me think of Muslim men that were out in public that day when this alert was released and their fear of being targeted.
