On September 9th the National Geographic Society, a non-profit organization, announced its partnership with 21st Century Fox in regards to their magazine. In exchange for $725 million, the society passed the magazine along with its book, map and other media assets to a Fox headed operation named National Geographic Partners. Under terms, Fox will control about 73% of the operation.
Unsurprisingly there seems to be a large amount of skepticism, especially from the magazines journalists, in regards to this exchange. These concerns are brought up when referring to both Fox’s current representation, mainly in regard to Fox News and Rupert Murdoch, and the content of the National Geographic Chanel, which has been run by Fox since 1997.
Personally I have mixed feelings about this, having grown up with National Geographic Magazines and having it been a large influence in my childhood dream of being a biologist. I am glad that the transaction will greatly help with the magazines finical crisis, ensuring that it will be around in the future. But again, with it now under a for-profit organization, especially one with a representation like Fox, I am concerned about the changes that may occur to its content. As of now there hasn’t been much detail about the future but reassuringly it has been briefed that little to nothing will be changed.
