When I was scrolling through Twitter on Friday night, I noticed an article that I couldn't pass up reading because I wanted to see if it was real or just a joke. The article read, “Cal Irvine’s Student Government Bans The American Flag From Being Hung, Deems It Offensive.” That definitely rose some questions for me and I had to read more. I came to find out that the article was in fact true and this had passed at UC Irvine. I literally couldn't believe that something like this would ever happen in the United States.

My first instinct that was if you don't like what this country stands for and represents, then you can pack your bags and leave. That is such a disgrace to the United States and everything we as a country have done for others. Not only that, but to the soldiers that risk their lives and fight for our freedom everyday at war. The flag represents so much of our country’s history and great accomplishments. I don't think this group of students realize how symbolic the U.S. flag is to our country. The main leader, Matthew Guevara claimed that without the flag, the campus would more of a “culturally inclusive” place. In my opinion, schools nowadays have done a tremendous amount to make sure their school is plenty diverse and there is something for everyone.

The thing these students fail to realize is how much the flag means to the true Americans. After reading the article and seeing the comments from various amounts of people, it showed me that I wasn't the only one who thought this was crazy. The school is going to veto this and continue to hang the American flag around campus, as it should be. I really do hope nothing like this will ever happen again because the American flag represents everything the United States has accomplished.
