This week Mike Pence, vice-president elect attended the broadway musical, Hamilton, and after the show, as the cast was basking in applause, one of the actors,Brandon Victor Dixon, directed a message to Pence. “We hope you will hear us out. We, sir — we — are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights,” he said. “We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.”
In the wake of this announcement, president-elect, Trump was appalled, calling this harassment, and insisting the cast should apologize to Pence for making these statements. Yet, what Dixon had to say as not offensive, but more of a request to not condemn certain Americans for being different than others, and expressing that shows like Hamilton would not exist without America’s diverse population. I applaud Dixon’s courage and ability to use his platform to say something meaningful, and what is on many American’s minds at this time.

Like most people I’ve heard from, I don’t think the cast in any way was disrespectful to Mike Pence. First of all, they didn’t start the booing, it was the audience. They even told the people not to boo. Second of all, when they spoke to Pence, it was after the show. I found what they said very inspiring and true because I believe this is how most of America feels right now. They were able to send a message to someone like Pence who will have a big impact in how our country will run in the next 4 years. But of course, Trump has to have the last word on Twitter. If anyone should apologize, it’s him for all the insults he threw during his campaign towards basically every minority. Even Pence didn’t see it as harassment and understood the message. I would also like someone to monitor what he tweets because he seems to complain about everything and everyone who has a different opinion or bad thing to say about him.
