A few months ago, I saw this video on YouTube by Brave New Films called “Why Charleston Shooter Isn’t Being Called a Terrorist: White Riots vs Black Protests”. It’s about the differences in how the media presents a large gathering of white vs black people. They show that when large groups of white people who are flipping cars over are referred to as “a little out of control“ and “passionate“, contrastingly, black crowds are called “criminals“ and “thugs“. I know this is something that we have all come to realize about the media, but when I saw this video for the first time, with the news reports side by side, I was blown away by the huge differences in language and just general mood of the stories.

The journalists that write these stories and report on it in this way are clearly racially biased. Good journalism should be completely unbiased, and purely report on the facts and be cautious about what words they used to describe the events. Instead, what they are doing is creating and perpetuating systemic racism in our society.

You can even see the direct effect this has on us as a society in the video - the cops are just standing around during a clearly very destructive riot involving mostly white people, while they outfit themselves with riot gear and shields during peaceful protests when the crowd mostly consists of black people. I know this issue goes much deeper than the media, but maybe if they decided to take responsibility and gave fair reports with better language, the rest of the country would eventually follow suit?

I agree with you totally, the media should ideally be unbiased. However as humans we always have our personal biases and it just depends if society at large agrees with your biases or disagrees with them. I think that it is possible to have media report things with less opinions and more facts but the only way to do this is to shift the way people think overall. Although that might sound really hard, which it probably will be. We all have to want it bad enough to change the way the world looks in our eyes and in the eyes of our peers. Everything starts at home and if people can teach their children that the messages on the news are not to be taken as the truth but are to be analyzed and to be taken along with many other sources of information to form an opinion on something; then we can in a way change the world. However the main issue and advantage is that the media is a business, and they are in the business of selling to us the general public. If we can tell them that their product is bad and we do not want to hear it, then we will definitely have the power to change everything.

The claim that blacks are the ones majority of the time who engage in violent acts. The claim is quite hypocritical and racist while implementing double standards is not fair. Although violence and some other disgraceful behavior displayed in the Baltimore riot shouldn't be condoned, there should be acknowledgment that there's only so much humiliation and injustice that one can take before snapping. People expect them to act like civilized human beings, but people never treated them as fellow human beings. On another note, blacks are not the only who engage in violent riots; many "sports fans" do the same thing simply because their team lost a game.

In my opinion, we have had such a long history of institutional racism that has created biases in people that are so in grained that people do not even know they exist. I think that this had lead to the distorted reporting regarding protests. For example, the media chooses to focus on a few violent events instead of describing all the peaceful protests. Also, the media describes property damage as violence in order to make the protesters seem more dangerous and menacing.
