The 67th annual Emmy Awards were this week and for the first time in its entire history, the best actress drama went to a a woman of color. I’m personally offended and outraged that Viola Davis’s win is such a monumental moment in history. This problem should have been fixed decades ago. The problem is not only the academy’s fault. The problem may not even be with the writer’s. This is everyone’s fault, including the viewers.

The problem starts with viewership and demand. The audience needs to demand something, in order to have it supplied. The TV producers need to be braver and take chances on characters of many cultures and colors. Writers are also responsible. They need to create characters for woman of color that show them as leading ladies instead of the sidekick best friend.

Viola Davis’s win was well deserved, because she was the best actress of the year. In her acceptance speech she says “The only thing that separates woman of color from any anyone else is opportunity.’ That couldn’t be more true. In 2012, Kerry Washington became the first african american woman to headline a primetime TV show since 1974. Lead roles for woman of color have not simply not existed on network television for almost 40 years. Writers, producers, and viewers need to come together to demand, create, and consume more cultured television.

Viola Davis's speech says it all. Watch it below. Congrats Viola! ...and thank you for being a pioneer that this world needs!

I am always offended when such a big deal is made when a person of color especially a black person is awarded for doing great. We always do great and are hardly recognized for it we have been raped of our achievements for decades. This is the 21st century and too many black first are being made like were just now starting to be accepted. Viola Davis does great works her shows are phenomenal and she is brilliant I am proud for her to be apart of my community.
