I couldn't handle anymore negative news, so I went in search of good news, specifically.

A barbershop in Michigan has started an uplifting children's reading program. They offer discounts to children who read outloud during their haircuts. The theme of the books in the shop are all books that feature stories that display positive images of African Americans. When kids do not finish a book during their haircut, the next time they come in, they pick up the same book to help with their reading comprehension and growth.

I love this sweet story because it shows a community taking action to help educate kids and get them interested in reading while also giving them resources that show people who look like them in the books they are reading. The more they consume, the more real it is for them that they are reflected in the very media they are consuming from a very young age. Although there are more and more children's books available that feature African American characters, African American lead characters, and African American history, it is rare that it is predominant in any one book collection or offered as learning material in schools. Also, barbershops are the cornerstone of many communities. When reading is encouraged and incentivized in a barbershop, I can see how it would lead to very positive results and create great role models that kids will literally grow up with, every few weeks, for what could be a life time.

This is so heartwarming! I love it! Not only is the barbershop motivating children to read, but they're also specifically providing books that spread a positive and inspiring message. I bet that these children will excel and one day be inspired to give back to the community too. I hope to see more barbershops do this!
