"Toxic Sludge Is Good For You" The Public Relations Industry Unspun YOUTUBE CLIP
After watching the clip, I truly realized the power of positioning a message to shift perceptions radically. On the topic of “Toxic Sludge is good for you” (22:00 min), I never realized that front groups who seem to appear neutral are used to intentionally mislead the audience because they are actually funded by the industry. Just like how the misleading name of “The Water Environment Federation” is actually a sewage sludge industry.

On the topic of “Selling Wars” (23:45min), the clips raised up some very important points about propaganda. We are so used to trusting media outlets and especially news media outlets that we fail to see through the PR schemes at play. Just like what Arthur Rowse mentioned, the reports on many of the PR efforts were reported as “straight news” which can easily mislead the audience. The audience absorbs all these information on why it would be the “ethical” thing to go to war. Propaganda unconsciously affects us and PR mavens know the ways of eating into the guilt of the audience. Just like they used young Kuwaiti refugee, Nayirah, to testify the horrors of the Gulf War at that time. They probably intentionally used a young girl to testify because the audience is more likely to feel compassion for her instead of an adult man. This testimony was supposedly the tipping point for pro-war forces. The command and influence of media outlets is only growing. With the prevalence of social media nowadays, propaganda, and PR agencies can reach the audience much faster. An example is the important role of social media in the Syrian crisis where it sparked a revolution and incited change in people’s mindset.
