A principal in New York was beaten after asking an 18 year old student to remove his headphones on campus. The student jumped onto the principal and continuously beat him in the face. The student was arrested and charged with second degree assault, a felony in Manhattan. I think that this article really does not describe the area that these students are in at all. This school is in an inner city area of Harlem. It is really upsetting to me that things like this happen in American schools. My aunt worked in an inner NY city high school and she told family that on parent-teacher night, not a single parent out of her 30-student class showed up. I think that this article really depicts the need for us to teach youth to respect adults, especially those who are trying to help lower income or underprivileged teens. There seems to be a lack of discipline for bad behavior as well if this teen felt entitled to beat anyone, let alone his principal. I do think that the article lacks necessary coverage of how the principal was regarded by teachers and other students. Perhaps there is a bias because maybe this principal hassled the teens or something similar. Regardless, in my opinion, our youth NEEDS to learn how to handle conflicts in a more positive manner as this is absolutely unacceptable.
